The Southeast Asian Language Department of the School of Foreign Language started undergraduate program in Vietnamese in 2011, Thai in 2014 and Myanmar in 2020. The department has delivered more than 500 non-general language talents. Taking the language and culture of Vietnamese, Thai and Myanmar as foundation, the department aims to deliver patriotic excellence with international vision. With the knowledge of international rules, cross cultural ability, and certain research ability, these students could participate in international affairs and competition, also can engage in language service, foreign language education and foreign-related work.
Features
The “3+1” model is adopted in the training of Vietnamese and Thai major students. In addition to one year on-campus courses, there is an eight-month overseas study in the target country, and a two-month internship in the school, institution, and enterprise during spare time and holidays. The students of Myanmar have a 6-month oversea study in Myanmar after three-semesters study in YNAU, and an one-month internship. This two-line training model is committed to equipping comprehensive talents with highly proficient foreign language skills, critical thinking skills and social responsibility.
We have a close cooperation and exchange relations with TThai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry and Hanoi University in Vietnam, and Chiang Mai University and Bansomdejchaopraya Rajabhat University in Thailand.
Faculties
To date, the Vietnam section has 5 full-time teachers, including 1 professor, 2 lecturers, and 2 teaching assistants. Among them, 1 is doctoral candidate, 2 have master degree, and 1 bachelor degree. The Thai section has 6 full-time teachers, including 1 associate senior translator, 1 translator, 1 lecturer, and 3 teaching assistants. Among them, 2 are doctoral candidates, 2 have master degree, and one bachelor degree. The Myanmar section has 2 full-time teachers, including 2 teacher assistants with master degree. The Vietnam and Thai sections have engaged foreign teachers respectively, 1 doctoral candidate, and 1 has master degree.
Achievements
The Vietnam section has completed the Yunnan provincial project of “Demonstration Site for Minor Language Talents training”, the Study on the Formation of the Sino-Vietnamese Words Borrowed from Japanese in Vietnamese project of Yunnan Education Department, and provincial excellent course “Vietnamese phonetics”. The section also presided over the National Social Science Youth Project “A Study on the Formation of Vietnamese National Consciousness in the First Half of the 20th Century”. Taking YNAU as an example, Thai section explores the training mode of “major+ Thai language”, and conducts relevant research. A number of core courses in each major have been approved by the university. The department has seen more than 30 papers by its faculty published.
